Paranormal expert reveals what to do if you think your house is haunted

Data also showed that the most common signs people had experienced if their house was haunted were feeling a presence, hearing sounds and seeing a shadow/figure  

Therefore, Moon Bingo spoke to Matt Barlow, Paranormal Investigator and Editor of GhostMag.com, to provide expert advice on what to do if you think your house is haunted 

With new episodes of the fifth series of Help! My House is Haunted airing throughout October, and as it's spooky season, Moon Bingo has spoken to Paranormal Investigator, Matt Barlow, to reveal more about what to do if your own house is haunted.  

Moon Bingo's research highlighted that almost one-fifth (19%) of adults have experienced their house being haunted. This interesting statistic led to Moon Bingo revealing the reactions that Brits would have if they did experience haunted happenings in their home, compared to which actions you should take, from the advice of an expert.  

Surprisingly, two in five (40%) said they wouldn't do anything if they thought their house was haunted and 21% would ignore it. Others would be more proactive and bring in the professionals by hiring an expert/medium (9%) whilst some would ask the ghost/spirit to leave (5%), cleanse their space with sage (5%) or light candles (3%). 

The actions adults would take if their house was haunted:

I wouldn't do anything (40%) 
Ignore it (21%) 
Hire an expert/medium to check if the house is haunted (8%) 
Put house up for sale and move out (8%) 
Ask the ghost/spirit to leave (7%) 
Cleanse space with sage (5%) 
Film it and post it on social media (3%) 
Light candles (3%) 
Use a Ouija board (2%) 
Put down black salt (1%) 

Expert tips on what to do if you think your house is haunted 

Matt Barlow explained:

"Interestingly, the varying reactions to potential hauntings in the home reflect the complex relationship individuals have with the supernatural. While a significant portion would prefer inaction or denial, there's an open-minded minority open to various engagement methods, including hiring experts and spiritual cleansing. 

However, it is important to stress that under no circumstances should you participate in a Ouija Board unless you know what you are doing. There are countless stories of individuals opening a doorway for spirit by dabbling and whether you believe in the Ouija board or not, it really should not be messed with.  

While unexplained occurrences can be unsettling, try not to panic, especially if the spirit does not seem malicious. Some spirits have strong connections to a location and remain as benign presences. Many people across the country happily coexist with friendly spirits in their home and although it may be unsettling for some, it can in fact be quite comforting for others. 

If paranormal activity begins to occur, I recommend keeping a detailed log of any strange events - noting dates, times, locations, and exact experiences. Photographs, videos, and audio recordings on smart phones or audio recorders can also help document phenomena or reveal electronic voice phenomena, which may help you to reveal who is haunting your property and why they have not moved on.  

If you begin to feel really unsettled, scared or unhappy with the spirits in your home you could attempt to be assertive and audibly tell the spirit that it is your property, and you would like them to leave. This is a simple method that is often overlooked but has been known to work in many haunted homes. 

You could also look to professional assistance, but homeowners should exercise caution before calling in local paranormal investigators, as many groups sadly employ questionable methods and may not have your best interests at heart. In no circumstances should you pay for help from paranormal investigators and if you do seek assistance, look for ethical groups that follow proper conduct, like the UK Paranormal Society's code of respectful investigation.

I also advise against provoking or disrespecting spirits, as they were once human too. Open and compassionate communication may help uncover why the spirit remains and how you can mutually coexist in the home!".
