The social classes of Brazil are divided into income groups namely Classes A, B, C, D and E. Classes A and B generally comprise of the high income classes. People with lower income levels belong to income classes D and E. Class C was the definition of middle class in Brazil. It was observed that the use of fitness centers by the middle classes was more than the elite classes. The segment of the fitness centers that have grown the most during the years from 2009 to 2014 were low cost and affordable fitness chains. The increasing number of lifestyle problems such as obesity diabetes, hypertension, cervical and other problems is on a rise due to the sedentary lifestyle have become very common among the youth as well as elderly population.
The fitness industry in Brazil has been segregated into two parts namely the fitness services and the fitness equipment market. The fitness services industry has always occupied a major share of the entire fitness industry in terms of revenue. The share of fitness equipment market in the overall market had 11.6% in 2014. The fitness services in Brazil majorly include gym facilities, Yoga, Pilate, Swimming, Martial Arts, Zumba, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Cross Fit. In the recent times, there has been a consolidation of fitness and entertainment in the form of activities such as Zumba, Yoga and others.
Healthy food has become more expensive in Brazil. As a result, both rural and urban communities across the country have reduced their intake of fruit and vegetables to include more meat, sugar and processed foods. An increased awareness towards fitness and active lifestyle is in turn is fuelling the growth of fitness market in all its aspects. There has been an increased awareness among the upper and middle class Brazilians towards proper lifestyle and the inclusion of fitness activities in the everyday routine to reverse the risk factors associated with the health.
As the fitness market gained attractiveness during 2009 to 2014, it gave an incentive to people to become a personal trainer. Since trainers are required to monitor the activities of the fitness activity subscribers, an increase in the number of gyms has led to an increase in the number of personal trainers in Brazil.
