A fuel cell electrolyzer, often referred to as an electrolysis fuel cell or an electrolysis cell, is a device that utilizes an electrochemical process called electrolysis to split water (H2O) into its constituent elements: hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2).

This process occurs by applying an electric current to water, causing it to dissociate into hydrogen ions (protons) and hydroxide ions (OH-) at the electrodes.

One example of a real-world application is the use of fuel cell electrolyzers in hydrogen refueling stations for hydrogen-powered vehicles. These electrolyzers generate hydrogen on-site by splitting water using electricity.
