New Website by the Law Offices of James Sokolove Helps Families Cope When a Loved One is Diagnosed

When it comes to an illness as serious as malignant mesothelioma—a rare and aggressive cancer for which there is currently no cure—the focus is almost always on the victim. However, according to Attorney Jim Sokolove, founder and principal of the Law Offices of James Sokolove, mesothelioma can be just as devastating for family members, some of whom find themselves in the role of caregiver. Earlier this fall, the firm launched the Mesothelioma Resource Center (www.mesorc.com) which provides vital information and support for families that are helping a loved one manage the disease.

"Just like the individual who has been diagnosed, family members, too, may be reeling from many different emotions—anger, confusion and fear," says Sokolove. "In addition to worrying about losing someone they love, they’re faced with the financial reality of mesothelioma treatment and care."

A section of the Mesothelioma Resource Center called "Mesothelioma’s Effects on the Family" offers tips on coping when a loved one has mesothelioma. Suggestions include educating oneself about the disease and exploring options such as hospice, which can provide end-of-life support by specially trained staff and volunteers. A healthy diet, rest and exercise are also emphasized as a means for helping relatives and caregivers maintain their well-being during an emotionally difficult time.

Additionally, family members are advised to seek out support groups where they can connect with others in a similar situation. The Mesothelioma Resource Center provides a comprehensive directory of support groups and other resources for victims, family members and caregivers.

“Families don’t have to carry this burden alone,” says social worker Mellissa Hayon, LICSW, who provides counseling and advice through the website. “The Mesothelioma Resource Center is here to help them deal with their loved one’s diagnosis in the most positive way possible.”

Those interested in learning more about malignant mesothelioma and the various support resources available can do so by visiting www.mesorc.com.
