Malignant mesothelioma is almost always caused by asbestos exposure. The risk of asbestos exposure is highest for people who worked with asbestos containing products. Asbestos containing products include brakes, roofing shingles, tiles and gaskets. People who work with these and other asbestos containing products are at risk of being exposed to asbestos and developing cancers such as lung cancer and mesothelioma. Workers who are often diagnosed with asbestos related illnesses are mechanics, plumbers, electricians, construction workers and sheet metal workers.
Asbestos cancers typically appear decades after exposure to asbestos has taken place. Thus, a person who worked with asbestos in the past is still at risk of developing an asbestos cancer. Mesothelioma symptoms can vary depending on the type of mesothelioma a person has. A person with mesothelioma can have peritoneal mesothelioma, which affects the abdominal cavity or pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lungs. Common mesothelioma symptoms are coughing blood, chest pain, shortness of breath, digestive problems and fever.
