Wasted heat recovery technology at magnoric

Ingenious ideas are often based on simple insights. This is one of the principles that guides the team of researchers and engineers at magnoric and makes them successful.
Heat is an untapped energy source that surrounds us everywhere, from our bodies to our infrastructure. The recycling of waste heat to heat homes and businesses is already being used today, though on a very modest scale.
But converting waste heat below 100°C to generate/reconvert it into electrical energy is uncharted technological terrain.
magnoric has not only targeted this "uncharted territory" of wasted heat recovery, but has successfully entered it. Our researchers in Duppigheim have successfully developed a prototype that uses a waste heat source of less than 40°C and converts it into electrical energy.
What motivates magnoric to research in this field and develop products?
The recovery of energy from unused heat sources represents a significant potential for the development of an efficient and climate-friendly energy supply.
In this context, so-called waste heat recovery targets the heat source generated by a process where the heat generation is a waste product of the main process and therefore not normally recovered. This is, for example, the combustion of a fuel for a furnace whose efficiency varies between 20 % and 40 %. So between 60 % and 80 % of the heat produced by this furnace is waste heat that is not used to produce energy.
How does the magnoric approach work?
The technology developed by magnoric is based on the magnetic transition of a magnetic alloy near its Curie temperature under the influence of temperature fluctuations. The material behaves para-magnetically above its Curie temperature and ferro-magnetically below its Curie temperature. This transition caused by rapid temperature fluctuations in the magnetic material is used by magnoric to create a magnetic imbalance as a function of temperature that causes the rotation of a magnetic rotor or the oscillation of a piston that drives an electrical generator.

Why?
70% of waste heat sources are below 100 °C. Today, there is no technology that can efficiently convert these energy sources into electricity. Our modelling and field tests show that magnetocalorics can achieve large conversion rates from low-temperature sources and low temperature differences. This opens the way for an efficient waste heat conversion plant that produces green electricity, in addition to providing revenue streams for our customers.
