“Stack and system testing for automotive applications”

Highly positive response to FuelCon keynote speech at the International PEM Stack Test Workshop of ZSW

Within the EU project “Stack Test” the 3rd International Workshop on PEM Fuel Cell Stack Testing „From Harmonized Fuel Cell Stack Testing to Standardization” was taking place from June 16th – 17th at the ZSW in Ulm. With its long-term experience in standardized testing procedures and environments, FuelCon Managing Board Mathias Bode was invited as keynote speaker.

On the way to reproducible and comparable test results for the characterization of PEM stacks, EU wide harmonized test procedures are a significant mile stone. The project “Stack Test” aims to develop guidelines for PEM stack characterization with focus on performance, durability and safety and applicable for portable, stationary and automotive applications.

In his presentation „Stack and system testing for automotive applications“ Mathias Bode started with the specific characteristics of a PEM stack or system for automotive applications, followed by an introduction of appropriate test procedures and testing environments for the evaluation of PEM fuel cell systems. Thereby, he explained the different testing requirements under changing environmental conditions very detailed. The active discussion, started at the end if Bode´s presentation demonstrated the great importance of the topic.

Evaluator test stations of FuelCon can be applied for testing PEM stacks or systems with different applications. Through integrated environmental chambers and cryostatic cycles, they allow the validation of PEM fuel cell engines for automotive use under simulated environmental conditions, including temperatures down to -40°C and up to 80°C. Thus, information for optimizing the critical freeze start or hot shut down behavior can be obtained.
