Bruce Brand's art has always been about inner struggle and a search for understanding and peace. In the 1960s his work was created out of anger, confusion, and disillusionment against the backdrop of the war in Vietnam. Then he discovered yoga and meditation and began what he calls his "inner work." He sought out gurus in India and sat in silence with Zen monks.
Now his paintings are a form of meditation, simultaneous reflections on the inner and outer worlds. His "Infinity Series: Aerial Seascapes" offers a prime example. These acrylics on wood are quasi-abstract representations of nature conveying the sense of delight that often occurs when one discovers the universe of the infinite self. They are recognizable as aerial images of earth, sky, and sea, but Brand has let his personal filter transform them into something idiosyncratic. "I want these images to reflect the mystery, beauty, and wonder of both of these worlds," he states. "Ultimately, I hope that my art is a wake-up call, a reminder of the miracle of each moment."
