During its ten years of existence the Zeughausmesse - Modern Craft Fair has been a success story for art, craft and design as part of Berlin’s cultural life. Once again at the 18th Zeughausmesse – Modern Craft Fair from 11th to 14th December a high quality selection of art of everyday use will adorn the Schlüterhof of the German Historical Museum. Some ninety-five artists will be showing off their work. Exquisit objects covering a wide range of disciplines including glas, wood, silver smithing, furniture and design, ceramics, leather design, hat design and textile and fashion design, as well as jewellery and utensils will be presented in a festive ambience.
To go with the the popular event’s anniversary the motto of year’s competition has also been appropriately named. The competition ’Ingenious Creation’ Excellent! – Between art and trophy
In order to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the fair, artists from all walks of life were challenged to fashion cups, medals and trophies in new and surprising ways using a large variety of materials and techiques. The best results will be presented at a special exhibition at the Zeughausmesse – Modern Craftt Fair 2014. Anja Heyman’s trophy shaped like an animal skin, the ‘fur’ consisting of thousands of pointy pins, provides the viewer with an element of surprise and food for thought. With the aid of specially developed software the designers Johanna Spath and Johannes Tsopanides have been using the new 3-D printing technique in order to make manifest the frequency spectrum of sounds, e.g. from a personal eulogy in the shape of a vase. The printed unique specimens can assume bizarre shapes, depending on the individual voice and volume. This ‘soundplotter‘ would also make it possible to encode national anthems to form a cup.
The Prize for Modern Craft sponsored by Berliner Volksbank
This prize has been awarded annually at the Zeughausmesse – Modern Carft Fair since 2014. From all particpants of this year’s fair three artists are selected and honoured with three prizes for outstanding achievements.
A wide range of excellent products for everyday use.
For this the splendour of the Schlüterhof provides a fitting ambience. Art for everyday use becomes a an everyday pleasure thanks to the artists‘ and designers‘ high standards. Every visitor is bound to discover something that will take their fancy. And if desired, he or she can engage the artists from various trades and regions in conversation. One of this sales exihibition’s aims is to provide its participants with a trade show that is highlighting current developments in contemporary Modern Craft. New ideas and concepts are equally important as tried and trusted traditional techniques.
This year the manufactory Holzwerk has been awarded the Bavarian State Prize for special creative and technical top-class achievements in the field of crafts. At the Zeughausmesse – Modern Craft Fair, among other things, you can admire a beautiful bar table ‘Pendler‘, which can be converted – by adjusting the gradient – for pleasant keyboard action, or into a comfortable reading or writing console or desk.
Designer Karina Wendt makes mouth blown bowls in various sizes and colours. They impress above all due to their colour effects and traces of tool application in the glass. As a special feature the artist makes individual glas objects for single old china lids. Her shapes range from small decorative boxes to large bowls and vases.
Alena Willroth is a fashion and textile creator who works with welding plastic materials. She has developed a technique that allows her to create very delicate, lacey shapes. The decorative unique specimens are made from soft polyethylene, are relatively tear-proof and absolutely unbreakable.
'A hat is a sculpture in itself‘ says Berlin master milliner Katharina Sigwart. By using a home made 3-D printer she has created a hat shape from which she has fashioned a unisex ‘wired‘ felt cap. This innovative headgear has been developed specifically for the wearing of head phones and is particularly eye catching.

Editorial note:
Berlin's Zeughausmesse – Modern Craft Fair has been held in the Schlüterhof of the German Historical Museum since December 2004. Within a very short time thanks to the high standard of quality the Zeughausmesse - Modern Craft Fair has established itself as one of the leading fairs for contemporary art for everyday use. The participating artists are selected by a panel of judges. Once a year in winter three female and male artists respectively are honoured for their exceptional achievements with the 'Prize for Modern Craft sponsored by Berliner Volksbank. A selection of objects from the competition’ Ingenious Creation’ are being exhibited at the Zeughausmesse – Modern Craft Fair since December 2012.
The Berlin Zeughausmesse - Modern Craft Fair is organised by the Berufsverband Angewandte Kunst (Professional Association for Modern Craft) Berlin-Brandenburg e.V. The fair is held once a year in December, before 2012 it was a biannual event. The Schlüterhof of the German Historical Museum provides the perfect ambience for this fair. As early as 1844 a great variety of Berlin arts and crafts were represented at this location in the framework of the ‘Allgemeine Deutsche Gewerbeausstellung’ (general German trade exhibition) to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the German Customs Union. Today, in this era of soulless industrial product uniformity, the Zeughausmesse - Modern Craft Fair has made it its mission to sharpen people's senses with respect to the beauty and special quality of fine objects of everyday use, as well as jewellery, which are manufactured on the basis of traditional craftsmanship with distinctive artistic characteristics.
