Oxford Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team praised
Oxford School of Martial Arts coach Mary Stevens (35) from Abingdon, praised the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team: “The ADCC UK Nationals is part of the biggest submission grappling circuit in the world and this was the first time we have entered a squad for the event. We were thrilled to do so well.”

The team consisted of Jacob Wilson, (22) from Chipping Norton, Theresa Quinn (39) from Abingdon who won silver in the lightweight class, Claire Maden (19) from Botley who won a heavyweight silver, only losing to Mary who took gold. This brings Mary’s medal haul to 3 gold and 2 silvers in the last 8 months – making her the nation’s top ranked fighter in her category.

Sensei Jake joins the team
The OSMA BJJ team added Sensei Jake to the tour bus for the first No Gi contest - the ADCC UK Nationals in Reading. Inspired by the stirring words of Team coaches Sensei Mary and Sensei Rob, Jake took the plunge and fought brilliantly against tough opposition. He dominated the takedown phase and held a guillotine choke for a minute and a half. However, his opponent had a phenomenal capacity for holding his breath, and eventually struggled through to win. This was an excellent debut for Jake and his competitive future in BJJ looks bright.

For over a decade Oxford School of Martial Arts has specialised in children's self-defence and fitness. Its programme has been developed by educationalists to run in parallel with the academic school system: classes are split into age and ability groups, have a clearly defined syllabus, set homework and have exams. Its mission is to help people get fitter and be safer whilst developing the life skills and strong character of a true martial artist.

Oxford School of Martial Arts produces black belts who are not only physically strong and skilful, but are also confident and courageous. It builds self-discipline, increases self-esteem, a positive mental attitude and a spirit of constant improvement. These values lead to success beyond the practice of martial arts; in academic and social environments as well as strengthening career prospects. Classes are run in Oxford, Kidlington and Abingdon for children aged 3 to 14 and for adults.
