Ernest Rathenau Verlag back in Germany to première new programme on 15 October 2007 at the Florian Walch Gallery in Munich

Munich, 1 October 2007 – They have come directly to Munich from New York to join forces here: the renowned Ernest Rathenau Verlag New York/Munich is launching “Streetprints 2000-07” featuring the internationally working artist Caro Jost as their first art book produced under new owner Robert Ketterer, owner of the distinguished auction house. This is nothing short of a minor sensation: the Ernest Rathenau Verlag, which had been almost forgotten in recent decades, has been re-activated and is publishing a work of art in the literal sense of the term with a 72-page survey of avant-garde artist Caro Jost’s work.

The artist: The Streetprint technique Caro Jost developed in the 1990s and realised in 2000 does not use any of the conventional tools of art such as palette knives or brushes. Instead, she uses her tangible surroundings as the material she works with. An unmediated exchange emerges: while the city immortalises its face on a canvas treated to a primer similar to cement, the canvas also leaves traces of its presence on the city streets. “Since what we do and how we develop our own aptitudes are automatically influenced by our environment, I’m incorporating the environment directly in the creative process. In this case, it’s the surfaces of New York and Munich streets,” explains Caro Jost.

The exhibition and the book: The retrospective will be presented at the Florian Walch Gallery in Munich on Monday, 15 October 2007 from 6 pm to 9 pm in a solo show. Caro Jost will be present while Professor Klaus Honnef, co-curator of documenta 5 & 6, introduces her work to the guests.

The book and the work can be viewed at Galerie Florian Walch, 1 Hartmannstrasse in downtown Munich from 15 to 17 October 2007 from 2 pm to 6 pm each day and by appointment. Bound in fine linen, the retrospective “Streetprints 2000-07” is the first chronological survey of the Streetprints made from 2000 to the present. It is available at the gallery in an exclusive edition of 1000 at € 27 and at booksellers: ISBN 978-3-931638-95-5. Numbers 1 to 100 are to be published as a special edition (numbered and signed).

The publishers: Visuals, tactile properties and content enter on a perfect synthesis in this retrospective, thus upholding the high quality standard set by this publishing house back in the 1920s. Under the aegis of Dr. Ernst Rathenau, important publications appeared on the works of Oskar Kokoschka, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Karl Hofer, Erich Heckel, Edvard Munch and Emil Nolde. Many of these ground-breaking books still represent the paramount scholarly catalogues of the above artists’ works. “The unique history of this publishing house is both the standard and an incentive for us. We are honoured to be permitted to safeguard and continue the splendid work of Dr. Ernst Rathenau,” in Robert Ketterer’s own words.
