2-propenenitrile, also known as Acrylonitrile (C3H3N), is not naturally occurring and is commercially produced using propylene, air, and ammonia via propylene ammoxidation, where they are reacted with a catalyst in a fluidised bed. It is a volatile liquid appearing as a colourless to pale yellow liquid with a pungent odour, the same as onion or garlic. Its exposure is toxic and can cause irritation in the mucous membranes.
