The female form figures prominently in Anya Rubin’s paintings. As portals to existence, women embody Rubin’s fascination with the paradox of the cosmos encompassed in each human being, as well as the connections between the individual and the universe. She portrays women not solely as symbols, but also the way they are in the contemporary world: smart, strong and sexy. Her interest in the feminine manifests itself in curvilinear lines. A recurring, mosaic-style composition within the boundaries of organic forms conveys the complexity hidden in each of us. These fragmented, multi-hued, yet paradoxically holistic beings are often suspended in dark space, portraying a poignantly existential view of our place in the universe. The painter at times dives into color, achieving oceanic blues reminiscent of Marc Chagall and audaciously expressing passion and intensity via blazing reds.
The New Jersey resident was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and has lived in Vienna, Germany and Israel. She studied at the Art Student League of New York, and privately with working professional artists.
