Small particle size, highly effective - Fine expandable graphite for coatings and textiles

Acting as a flame retardant and being free of any halogens expandable graphite is a well settled intumescent builder in many applications nowadays. For instance polyurethane foams or bitumen membranes have been flame protected for many years with expandable graphite.

Down to particle sizes of generally 300 – 500 µm it was hardly possible to use this additive in applications such as thin coatings for textiles.

Now GEORG H. LUH GmbH provides two fine types of expandable graphite which meet the challenging requirements of such applications. With an average particle size of 50 resp. 100 µm both products GHL PX 96/-1 and PX 90/-2 are fine enough, to be mixed even in very thin layers by keeping the mechanical functionality of the coating or textile stable. At the same time, in the event of a fire these expandable graphite types build up a protecting intumesence coating with expansion rates of 100 resp 30 ccm/g. This unique combination of very small particle sizes and high flame retardant effects provides important and sustainable properties which will be essential for coatings and textiles in the near future. Thus, everyone who uses expandable graphite in their application obtains an effective and trendsetting flame retardant.
