Cuculus has joined the Smart Energy Demand Coalition
Cuculus GmbH has joined the Smart Energy Demand Coalition (SEDC) to contribute to addressing key challenges in the European energy markets.Cuculus GmbH, a fast-growing software company based in Ilmenau, Germany, became a member of Smart Energy Demand Coalition (SEDC) this spring. Cuculus provides solutions that enable utilities to implement and operate smart metering infrastructures as well as in-home systems for energy management and control. The company is convinced that innovative solutions are required to address the challenge of maintaining a reliable and affordable energy supply. Cuculus intends to use its membership to play an active role in developing European energy markets.
“European consumers are paying a high price for the transition to renewable energy,” Kjartan Skaugvoll, CEO of Cuculus, explained. “The costs are rising very rapidly, which is worrying. The introduction of dynamic tariff models based on smart meter data would reduce energy expenditure and also make the energy transition affordable. We are convinced that such models would reduce the costs of the energy transition by at least 50 percent. Through our SEDC membership, we are playing an important part in making such innovative tariff models a reality.”
The SEDC is an industry group which supports the development, deployment and utilization of smart energy demand in order to further the development of the Smart Grid and ensure improved end-consumer benefits. The SEDC vision is to promote the active participation by the demand side in European electricity markets – ensure consumer benefits, increase security of supply and reduce carbon emissions. The SEDC focus is to promote Demand Side programs such as, Demand Response, energy usage feedback and information, smart home, in-home and in-building automation, electric vehicle charging management, and other programs related to making demand a smart, interactive part of the energy value.
Cuculus helps utilities deliver Smart Metering by connecting electric, gas and water meters to ZONOSTM, a robust IT platform that can be integrated with utilities existing back-end systems. Cuculus has also developed the infrastructure and products required to support the management of home appliances (“Home Control”) for utilities and Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The ZONOSTM platform is open and vendor independent thus making it possible to work with the meters and communication structure of choice. The system is scalable and can be implemented as a managed service or running in a company’s system environment. This creates the opportunity for simple and cost effective roll out of services. Cuculus was spun out of Ilmenau University of Technology and IDEO Laboratories GmbH in 2007.

Cuculus and Elvaco bring water and district heat smart metering to the next leve …
Many smart water and district heating meters are not as smart as electricity meters. These meters lack the ability for flexible scheduling of meter reads. Handling of events and alarms is very limited and advanced security standards are not supported. In most cases, these meters communicate with a gateway through cable using the M-Bus protocol or wirelessly through the wM-Bus protocol.
Cuculus and Elvaco have designed and implemented a concept which…
