Douglas Detrick's AnyWhen Ensemble (Eric Vitale, 2012)

Douglas Detrick's AnyWhen Ensemble (Eric Vitale, 2012)

GARDEN CITY, NY, March 2014—Douglas Detrick’s AnyWhen Ensemble will perform on March 7, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall in the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AUPAC) at 1 South Ave, Garden City, NY. The ensemble’s unique instrumentation allows the fusion of the structure of chamber music with the spontaneity of jazz. The ensemble will perform select movements from Douglas Detrick’s piece The Bright and Rushing World as well as new works by Adelphi composers.

The AnyWhen Ensemble was founded by Douglas Detrick as a means of performing his original composition for his master’s thesis recital at the University of Oregon. The group has continued to play long after the thesis recital and has performed at festivals and colleges across the United States. The AnyWhen Ensemble includes Douglas Detrick, trumpet; Hashem Assadullahi, saxophone; Shirley Hunt, cello; Steve Vacchi, bassoon; and Ryan Biesack, percussion.

The Bright and Rushing World was composed by Detrick under commission from the New Jazz Works and a Presenting Jazz grant from Chamber Music America in 2011. The piece contains 10 movements, each of which is represented by a line in a poem Detrick wrote upon finishing the piece and realizing it was still unnamed.

Adelphi composers Sidney Marquez Boquiren, chair of the Department of Music; senior Brandon Dove; and junior Shayne Plunkett will premiere new works written for AnyWhen Ensemble at the concert. Both Dove and Plunkett have included extensive improvisational sections in their compositions, playing to the uniqueness of the AnyWhen Ensemble’s instrumentation.

Adelphi University’s Performing Arts Center is one of Long Island’s premier cultural arts venues for entertainment of all kinds. Tickets for Douglas Detrick’s AnyWhen Ensemble are on sale now and are priced at $20.00. For more information about all the events at AUPAC and to purchase tickets, visit aupac.adelphi.edu.
