Discovering Berlin with an Audio Walk

Discovering Berlin with an Audio Walk

“Forever it will stand in honour of the working classes and their revolutionary traditions” – this was the prophecy of Erich Honecker, subsequent Head of State of the GDR, in his speech at the foundation ceremony of the Palace of the Republic in 1973. History however, as is well known, took its own turn: After fourteen years of use and another fourteen years of remaining unoccupied, the demolition squads have now begun their work and are razing down the remains of this colossal construction of glass and steel to the ground.
The guided audio tour “Mitte-Schritte” by urban sounds to go narrates the history of this site and that of many other buildings in Berlin’s historical city centre. Honecker once again has his say here.

The authors of this guided audio walk dug deep into audio archives and stumbled onto a number of rarities, which make this journey of discovery through 800 years of Berlin’s history a particularly unique one.
Antique audio recordings are, however, just one speciality of this audio tour on hire. “It is like a walk-along radio play,” commented one tourist enthusiastically. Indeed, the protagonists of this audio play do not stop with just mentioning historical dates, but also narrate their own stories and experiences. This makes sightseeing into an altogether different and exciting experience.
