Local governments have their own LMS needs

Between national and state agendas, community expectations and regional talent scarcity, local governments face many workforce challenges. A good local government learning management system (LMS) can make all the difference. That's one of the key takeaways from the Acorn subject matter experts' latest article on local government LMSs.

At a high level, the local government LMS is used to provide both internal employee training and external public training. Internally, the talent pool for local government isn't as wide as state or federal. Employees are usually locals and live regionally, which can exacerbate skills or capability shortages in smaller communities. This makes professional development crucial.

In order to find an LMS that fits, the Acorn experts believe local governments need to clearly define their use case. Doing so will allow them to find an LMS with the features to support that use case.

To determine use case, local governments must determine the problems L&D or an LMS can solve, understand what functionality the LMS needs, and outline the forms of training required. The most common use cases for local governments are compliance training, leadership and succession training, internal and external training, and reporting.
