Automotive Ethernet is a point-to-point networking technique, unlike bus technology, where an electronic device or one node is connected with another. A switch is included in the system to make connections between numerous nodes. This switch allows several ECUs to interact and directs traffic to various nodes depending on their physical addresses within a network.

Ethernet specifications for automobiles: The automobile-specific ethernet standards are 100Base-T1 and 1000Base-T1, which were developed to satisfy the needs of car networking. 100BASE-T1 permits the exchange of connected car, audio, video, firmware/software, and calibration data within automobiles utilizing AVB and employs an unshielded single twisted-pair cable to carry the data.

Cost efficient: Flexray and CAN, whose throughput is only 10 Mbps, are not appropriate for automotive applications since they stream audio and video. Automotive Ethernet, which has a starting base rate of 100 Mbps and is far less expensive than other networking protocols, contrasts with this.

Compared to the conventional cable used for in-vehicle communication, the wire utilized in automotive ethernet for automobiles is far lighter and more effective. Manufacturers may cut the cost of communication by up to 80% and the weight by up to 30% using a lightweight wire.

Networking Topology: Numerous topologies are employed in automobile technologies. One of the topologies that are frequently used in automotive networking is point-to-point. Most automotive Ethernet applications employ a star topology, in which all nodes or ECUs are linked to a single central switch. Star topology is mainly used in the automotive ethernet-based in-car entertainment systems, whereas ring topology is used in the vehicle's safety-critical applications.
