FOCUS: Logistics: Current Trends, Opportunities, and Challenges

Logistics has become an indispensable component of today’s global economy. On Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, a lunch discussion at the German Center for Research and Innovation (GCRI) New York will address challenges and opportunities in the field. NEW YORK (October 3, 2013) – Global supply chains and international distribution networks are a key performance factor for many companies. The optimization of transportation and logistics solutions provides corporations a competitive edge. Companies and their logistics providers also face numerous challenges, including efficiency, flexibility, quality, security, and sustainability.

On October 8, experts from DB Schenker, Cisco Systems, Hapag-Lloyd, Lufthansa Cargo, and the Georgia Institute of Technology will discuss strategies and key trends in global logistics.

Heiner Murmann, Member of the Board of Management at Schenker AG, responsible for Air and Ocean Freight, and CEO of DB Schenker in the Americas, will address the history of the Schenker/Cisco relationship and their path toward innovation partnerships in logistics. He will be joined by Jack Allen, Senior Director of Logistics and Manufacturing Solutions at Cisco Systems, who will discuss Cisco’s partner segmentation strategy and scope of operations, as the company has moved from a regional niche provider to a global strategic partnership. His talk will draw upon 20 years of experience in manufacturing, supply chain, sales and general management.

Gary Cleave, Senior Vice President of Regional Sales and Customer Service for Hapag-Lloyd (A), Inc., will discuss container shipping trends, challenges, and opportunites. Hapag-Lloyd is currently the sixth largest container carrier globally, with over 150 modern ships and more than 7,000 staff in 114 countries. Alexander Karst, Director of Sales and Handling for USA Northeast and Mid-Atlantic at Lufthansa Cargo AG, will speak about exciting prospects and challenges in the global air freight environment with regards to market development, customer requirements, regulations, and innovations.

John-Paul Clarke, Associate Professor of The Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering and The H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, as well as Director of the Air Transportation Laboratory at the Georgia Institute of Technology, will moderate the discussion. He has been recognized globally for his influential contributions in the areas of air traffic management, aircraft operations, and airline operations

The discussion will take place on Tuesday, October 8, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., at the German House New York (871 United Nations Plaza, First Avenue, btw. 48th & 49th Streets).
