Disruptive building technology wins Engineering Excellence Award
Space 2.0 took out the Product, Manufacturing Facilities and Processes category announced this month for what has been described as true ‘disruptive technology’ in the building industry.
TEKTUM joint managing director, Nicolas Perren, says SPACE2.0 is a plug-and-play housing solution which provides the next generation of cost effective, ready-made buildings that can be quickly installed anywhere in Australia.
“The SPACE2.0 building platform is intended to transform the construction industry, ensuring buildings can be produced and operated at a higher quality for a lower cost,” Mr Perren says.
“The key innovation with SPACE2.0 is the design mechanism which allows a full sized house to be transported as standard ISO transport platforms, then easily unfolded on site, with all services and finishes in place.
“Its modularity allows us to constantly produce the same elements, generating economies of scale through strategic procurement, manufacturing efficiency and controlled quality.”
The award judges applauded the SPACE2.0 system for its innovative design, attention to detail, quality control, first class materials and finishes, and its ability to be used in a variety of situations including remote communities as well as offering fast responses for emergency situations.
Arup principal Andrew Johnson says the engineering approach to SPACE2.0 helped realise TEKTUM’s vision to create a modular house that aesthetically feels like a normal home.
“The structure is designed to allow ease of transportation and construction, and the sustainability features such as rainwater capture create a solution that can reduce the carbon footprint both during construction and operation, and allow adaptation to different climates,” Mr Johnson says.
SPACE2.0’s disruptive technology applies manufacturing processes to the construction industry by utilising a robotised system in what is a first for the building sector.
Mr Perren says the award was a major acknowledgement for the system that has already secured a number of contracts around the country.
“We are extremely excited to have been recognised for our revolutionary building system,” Mr Perren says.
“We have already completed projects utilising the SPACE2.0 system including a project for National Disability Living Solution in Wodonga and a house in Mackay, Queensland.
“However as with all great innovations it couldn't have been done without a number of key contributors including our engineering partner and industrial designers, as well as the TEKTUM team who were all instrumental in getting SPACE2.0 to where it is now.”
TEKTUM is also in negotiation with a property development company to produce the modular housing as part of a residential property portfolio.
The Annual Engineering Excellence Awards Sydney celebrate the accomplishments of some of the finest engineering companies and individuals in the world.
The Awards showcase leaders in the profession along with world-class engineering and innovation.
