New massive open online course (MOOC) will connect global community of K-12 online educators
(McVeytown, PA) – Online teachers around the world are enrolling in the Blended Schools Network’s newest MOOC, “Today’s Online Teacher”. The course is designed to educate teachers about trends and best practices in online teaching. Each week of the seven-week course includes a live session, course materials, sharing by participants, and feedback on projects. It’s also filled with opportunities for teachers to make connections and build a learning community. Throughout the course, teachers will get feedback on their work from experienced online teachers. The course begins October 21, 2013.Online learning tools vary from school to school, and there are already many resources for teachers to learn those tools, so this course is not about online teaching technology. Instead, the course is structured around essential questions of online teaching, including:
• How can teachers support students in an online environment?
• How does an online teacher encourage community building among students?
• How can teachers add or adapt course content to support different student needs?
• How can teachers identify causes of disengagement and apply appropriate interventions?
• How does a teacher contribute to online course content using live online sessions?
• How can teachers ensure the validity and reliability of course materials and activities?
Mark Radcliffe, Director of Professional Development at the Blended Schools Network, describes the reason Blended Schools is offering this course, “We want to have a conversation with the global community of K-12 online teachers about getting beyond the technology to the effective strategies of online teaching. We have been working in this field for almost 12 years, and we have a lot to share, but we also want to give teachers the chance to share, so we can all learn more from each other.”
Radcliffe went on to say, “After completing our course, an online teacher will be ready to run a high quality course from beginning to end. We are focusing on making sure that each week’s activities lead to immediate benefits for the teachers and their students.”
