Ploughshare Innovations to showcase new technologies at DSEI 2013

09-06-2013 05:50 PM CET | Science & Education

Press release from: Ploughshare Innovations.

The world’s largest fully-integrated defence and security exhibition, DSEI, is coming to London next week and will offer the chance for the entire industry to develop global relationships with suppliers from across 50 countries.

The event – which will be held at ExCel on September 10-13 – will bring together 1,400 international exhibitors, offering unrivalled access to key global markets. DSEI will provide the opportunity to develop international relationships and generate exciting new business opportunities, while also offering the chance to source the very latest in defence and security equipment and systems.

One of the organisations featured at this year’s event is Ploughshare Innovations, which manages the commercial licensing to industry of Intellectual Property (IP) developed by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). Licensing technology from Ploughshare (stand N5-470) aims to offer clients a competitive edge by lowering technology risk, reducing R&D costs, speeding up time to market, and boosting business opportunities. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dstl, Ploughshare offers leading-edge, application-focused technology, backed up with the assurance of advanced IP support and protection. It also furthers Dstl’s mission to maximise the impact of science and technology for the defence and security of the UK.

The technologies on display at Ploughshare’s stand will include the Blunt Impact Head Injury Model, (BIHIM) which is available for license. The BIHIM is a physical tool for assessing skull fracture risk during blunt impacts, such as when a helmet deforms and presses against the head under dynamic loading – something that is termed ‘Behind Armour Blunt Trauma’ (BABT). The BIHIM boasts a single versatile platform for the assessment of fracture risks at multiple regions of the skull, which therefore allows the BABT risk of the whole helmet surface to be tested.

Another technology on display will be the Lateral Flow detection device, which is already non-exclusively licensed to BBI Detection. This integrated sampling device can be used to swab a surface quickly and easily, allowing for immediate analysis and identification of the sample. A range of substances including explosives and bacterial contamination can be tested for. The device is also capable of retaining the sample in order to allow for further analysis, or to act as forensic evidence at a later date.

Ploughshare will also be showcasing the ‘dunkable’ TM coated smartphone from spin-out company P2i, the world leaders in liquid repellent nano-coating technology. The technology was developed to make the protective clothing worn by the military more effective against chemical attack while still being durable, lightweight and comfortable to wear.

DSEI is such a crucial event in the defence and security marketplace as it allows organisations the opportunity to support UK defence with MOD developed innovation, as well as raising awareness of Dstl’s vital work. It allows key technology examples to be shown to a wider audience, as well as creating the opportunity for the technology to be licensed, which in turn will lead to a far better return on taxpayer investment in science and technology.

Read more information about this year’s event at the DSEI website, http://www.dsei.co.uk and visit Ploughshare Innovations at Stand N5-470.
