Industri farmasi nasional diproyeksikan tumbuh tahun ini karena jumlah peserta Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional - Kartu Indonesia Sehat (JKN-KIS) terus bertambah. Per 31 Desember 2019, jumlah peserta BPJS Kesehatan adalah 224 juta orang dan telah melampaui 83% dari total penduduk Indonesia.
Obat generik banyak digunakan sebagai alternatif obat paten yang harganya mahal. Mahalnya harga obat ini akibat bahan baku obat yang diimpor. Melalui program JKN, pemerintah mengatur harga agar obat terjangkau oleh daya beli masyarakat.
Adopsi jalur online untuk pembelian obat-obatan perlahan meningkat seiring limpahan pandemi Covid-19. Pada tahun 2020, Universal Health Coverage meluncurkan aplikasi mereka, aplikasi Mobile JKN untuk konsultasi medis dengan dokter. Aplikasi ini juga memiliki fitur pengiriman obat-obatan melalui kurir dari apotek klinik utama.
Prevalensi Tinggi Penyakit Terkait Gaya Hidup: Pendapatan per kapita yang tinggi, gaya hidup sedentary dan kebiasaan makan yang tidak sehat telah mendorong gaya hidup tidak aktif di kalangan masyarakat Indonesia selama beberapa tahun terakhir. Hal ini telah meningkatkan insiden berbagai masalah kesehatan terkait gaya hidup di antara penduduk negara yang telah menjadi kekuatan pendorong utama di balik pertumbuhan sektor ritel farmasi. Per Desember 2019, 13,5% orang dewasa berusia 18 tahun mengalami kelebihan berat badan dan 28,7% mengalami obesitas (BMI >25) di Indonesia.

Pertumbuhan Ritel Online: Untuk meningkatkan aksesibilitas dan kenyamanan, hampir semua rantai ritel farmasi besar telah mulai menawarkan produknya melalui portal online. Dengan pertumbuhan orang yang sadar kesehatan, permintaan akan produk nutrisi dan suplemen meningkat. Ini telah memfasilitasi penjualan produk tersebut melalui saluran online. Hal ini semakin didukung dengan tumbuhnya kesadaran medis dan peningkatan jumlah pengguna internet di Indonesia. Jumlah pengguna internet di Indonesia meningkat dari 89,3 juta pada tahun 2015 menjadi 175,4 juta pengguna pada tahun 2019.

Peningkatan Harapan Hidup dan Populasi Penuaan: Angka harapan hidup Indonesia pada tahun 2019 adalah 71,59 tahun, meningkat 0,25% dari tahun 2018. Selain itu, wanita memiliki angka harapan hidup yang lebih tinggi daripada pria. Diperkirakan pada tahun 2025 akan ada 33,69 juta orang dengan usia >60 tahun. Statistik ini mencerminkan cara yang lebih baik untuk mengendalikan penyakit menular dan fasilitas medis yang lebih baik. Kedua faktor ini secara bertahap menyebabkan peningkatan usia rata-rata penduduk Indonesia. Biasanya, pengeluaran perawatan kesehatan individu tinggi selama tahap akhir kehidupan seseorang. Dengan meningkatnya populasi usia tua, penjualan obat-obatan di dalam negeri juga cenderung meningkat dari tahun ke tahun.

Permintaan Farmasi Anjlok karena Covid-19: Permintaan obat-obatan turun hingga 50% selama pandemi virus corona. Hal ini dikarenakan permintaan yang rendah, terutama dari rumah sakit yang sepi pengunjung akibat Covid-19. Ini semakin dipicu oleh orang-orang yang menahan diri untuk mengunjungi apotek di tengah ketakutan tertular virus. Norma jarak sosial dan penguncian yang diberlakukan berdampak buruk pada industri ritel farmasi di Indonesia. Selain masalah produksi dan utilitas, perusahaan farmasi mengalami kesulitan arus kas karena masih banyak rumah sakit yang menunggak pembayaran obat. Pada Juli 2020, total tagihan yang belum dibayar ke fasilitas kesehatan mencapai Rp3,0 triliun. Permintaan obat dalam negeri masih rendah di awal tahun 2020, namun ada peningkatan permintaan produk OTC di paruh kedua tahun ini. Pemulihan yang lambat diharapkan pada tahun 2021. Produsen diharapkan mengalihkan fokus ke obat generik seiring dengan peluncuran produk OTC baru karena meningkatnya tren pengobatan sendiri di negara ini.
