100+ Indoor Farms to be Purchased by Supermarket Chain from Chicago Sustainable Agriculture Firm

FarmTower Co. has recently announced a deal with a national supermarket chain that will purchase 100+ turnkey aquaponic farms from the Chicago sustainable agriculture firm over the next 10 years. The aquaponic farms will grow seafood and produce symbiotically, using the same recirculating water. FarmTower Co.’s proprietary technologies convert the waste from aquatic species into organic fertilizers for fruits and vegetables- while conserving water and lowering costs. A variety of premium, organic produce and seafood will be raised and be exclusively sold by the yet-to-be disclosed chain. Produce such as lettuce, herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, and eggplants will be grown year-round within 100 miles of stores in specific markets. In addition, seafood such as tilapia, yellow perch, and prawns will be grown in recirculating aquaculture systems.

Restaurants, schools, and now supermarkets are eager to cut out the distant farmers and many distributors that handle and markup the food. To keep operational costs down, the systems have been designed from scratch, utilizing the many findings from their R&D. The indoor farming systems can be placed in current or new commercial warehouse spaces, stacked vertically, and operated with little training. The user-friendly technology has been developed for easy scaling, allowing individuals, companies, or entire communities to grow their own food.

FarmTower Co. obtained clearance from Chicago officials to build and operate their R&D farm in the city limits. It is the primary location of their operations and the first vertical indoor farm in the city. Having worked with Mr. Amini to set the rules and regulations for indoor farming and aquaponics, Mayor Rahm Emanuel says, “Chicago is becoming a national leader in urban agriculture and they [FarmTower Co.] are developing technology for growing tilapia in-house, how to do the lighting and patenting it.” adding, “As populations grow, urban agriculture is becoming a growing and important field.”
