As a result of new restrictions around river pollution, homebuilders could face a paved driveway ban. This comes as the government is looking at forming new driveway rules to help clean up the UK's waterways as well as builders' 'right to connect' to sewage networks.

Junior environment minister Rebecca Pow while speaking to The Telegraph about the Clean Rivers campaign in her Somerset constituency of Taunton Deane, said that in the future, new housing developments may have to show that they have plans for a sustainable drainage system (SUDS) in place before they will be allowed to connect to local sewage networks.
This is a move made to prevent the sewers from becoming overwhelmed and it is likely that the new driveway rules will include restrictions on solid paved driveways in favour of green spaces.
The government is said to be considering creating ponds which will allow water to permeate into the ground instead of running off the surface of an impermeable driveway and into drains which can put pressure on sewage systems.
Rebecca Pow also said that there is a lot of water getting into the drains and getting muddled up with the sewage that doesn't need to be there. She also adds that there is a need to have water butts in gardens while also emphasizing on the need for semipermeable membranes on UK driveways rather than Tarmac so that water doesn't rush in.
Consequently, major housing developments may also have to invest in new sewage infrastructure to avoid overwhelming the existing network.
Other permeable driveway options which could be considered include gravel or shingle, which are visually appealing and are relatively cheap to install. There are also resin-bound driveways, or wheel tracks which can be an alternative to solid paving. In this method, paving is only installed in two strips where your car's wheels will rest when parked in the driveway, while the rest can be gravel or grass.
The goal here is to make our rivers cleaner through more sustainable gardens and driveways which will ultimately make local areas nicer places to live. Also, with the new driveway rules, more green spaces can be created where wildlife can thrive rather than having a lot of paved-up concrete in new buildings.
