Brazil hosts the I International Conference on Solid Waste

The threats to the environment have been a constant topic of discussion among heads of state, international organizations, companies and civil society. Last year, for example, at the Fifth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) there was much talk about the crisis related to solid waste - whose inadequate management is a source of carbon dioxide emissions, contributing to the greenhouse effect. To have an idea of the impact of waste, in Brazil, 80 million tons of waste are generated per year. According to the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea), 40% is disposed inappropriately in dumps or controlled landfills.

Focusing on this issue, Brazil will host the I International Conference on Solid Waste (CIRSOL), which will take place in Recife - Pernambuco state, between March 16th and 18th. The event will bring together representatives from the private and public sectors, international organizations (ONU and ISWA), academics, and civil society, and will take place, both in person and oline. Registration can be done through the conference website.

CIRSOL will bring together 140 speakers from more than 17 countries and has 22 highly relevant coordinating institutions - which have signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with the aim of jointly producing the event. It will be the first conference of its size on the theme in Brazil. At the end of the meeting, a letter of commitment will be drafted, aligned with the brazilian National Solid Waste Plan (PNRS Law no. 12.305/10). In addition, all solid waste generated by the event will have a correct destination, as well as a monitoring and compensation system for carbon emissions.

According to Ana Paula Rodrigues, president of the Institute of International Cooperation for the Environment (ICIMA) and one of the creators of the event, this is an opportunity to debate the impact of solid waste on climate change and present a proposal for a legacy that articulates all the organizations involved. "The UN Sustainable Development Goals establish goals to be achieved by 2030 and this date is very close. During CIRSOL, we will evaluate the advances in meeting these goals and define some actions for the coming years. One of the legacies we intend to leave behind is the creation of the Solid Waste Observatory, which does not exist in Brazil yet." - highlights the specialist.

Opening
The opening ceremony will be held at Armazém 14, on March 16th, at 9am, and will be attended by experts and international authorities, such as the Governor of the State of Pernambuco, Paulo Câmara; the Mayor of Recife, João Campos. Besides the names mentioned above, all the Deans of the Coordinating Institutions and representatives of organizations and associations, such as: United Nations Development Program (UNDP); Global Compact; Federation of Industries of the State of Pernambuco (FIEPE); ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability; International Solid Waste Association (ISWA); Commercial Association of Pernambuco (ACP); and Municipal Association of Pernambuco (AMUPE), will also attend.
