NC author's new book series receives a warm literary welcome.
In Lisa Creech Saleh’s collection of fiction books in her Pandemic Series, the reader follows Nana's journey as she finds her way through the Covid-19 pandemic. Nana's experiences are genuine and endearing, and the tales from the young Petunia are priceless. The strength of the series is that it’s not about Covid, or even politics. In this series, the mask is not only a face covering, but also a symbol for grief that Nana experiences following the passing of her sister."Covid is a background presence, rather like living in a world where zombies exist, ready to snare the unprepared or the unwary. Nana is aware of, or perhaps even accustomed to, the ever-present danger, but she is busy getting on with her life, taking positive steps towards...confronting her past, and healing old wounds." Michael Gardner, Reader's Favorite
In Saleh’s first book in the series, Mask On, the reader meets the two main characters, Nana and Petunia. Nana is an office manager at a restaurant, who is working mostly from home during the pandemic. Petunia is a quirky teenager, voicing her thoughts on life as it revolves around herself.
“The dialogues between Nana and Petunia are charming, hilarious, and deeply touching; in a word, priceless.” Jon Michael Miller, Readers' Favorite
The second book in the series, Blue Mask, Red Hat, Nana attempts to reunite with old friends from her childhood. She takes a trip down memory lane by visiting her hometown and tries to confront her past and resolve her grief over the loss of her sister.
“It’s well written and endearing, drawing the reader into the story and engaging our sympathy. The interludes back to the 1970s and 1980s add extra depth to the story, showing the touching relationship between the sisters.” Michael Gardner, Readers’ Favorite
The third book of the series, Mask Off continues the story of Nana, who juggles her responsibilities of raising a teenager and helping with the family business, but also makes time to visit her mother at a senior living facility.
“Nana must traverse through current difficulties, like taking care of her aging mother and being a mother, but she comes to realize the past and the present are connected in more ways than one. As Nana visits her mother and visits with other senior citizens, she reflects on her own grandparents and the influences they had on her.” Hayley Haun, Readers' Favorite
While the three books in the Pandemic Series collection tell a story of life during the Coronavirus pandemic, the two main themes found in the stories are grief and the passing of time. The inspiration behind the book series was not only the pandemic, but also the unexpected passing of Saleh’s sister, Kim, in early 2020 following her struggle with bipolar disorder.
Saleh says, “2020 was a difficult year for me, and I’m not talking about the pandemic. After the sudden passing of my sister, I felt the wind had been knocked out of me. The pandemic gave me an excuse to stay home, while I figured things out. I began writing, and I found that it helped me through the grief process. I hope that the reader of my books will laugh and cry along with me as they enjoy the stories that I have to tell.”
