Friction in Maharashtra Congress: Legislature party leader Balasaheb Thorat resigns from CLP post, blames State Party Chief Nana Patole

Friction in Maharashtra Congress: Legislature party leader

On Tuesday February 7, the raging friction in Maharashtra Congress grew after senior Congressman and former State Minister Balasaheb Thorat resigns from Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader post over differences with party state president Nana Patole.

According to the close aide of Thorat, Balasaheb Thorat sent his resignation letter on February 2 to Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge saying he was targeted and disgraced by Mr. Patole and can no longer continue as the Maharashtra Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader. He conveyed about the internal politics agonizing the party and revealed about conspiracy, run against him to portray that he was aligning with the BJP. He also shared that he is not being consulted before making any decisions in Maharashtra. The letter further said some functionaries from Ahmednagar were punished over this issue.

Though his resignation has not accepted yet by the party central leadership, Thorat is said to be determined on quitting the crucial post he has been holding since June 2019.

However, Nana Patole had denied any such letter was written to the reporters and said "I do not know what letter Thorat saheb has written. I would be ready to speak about it, if you can make the contents of the letter available to me. Today being his birthday, I wish him all the best and pray for his good health and success in his political career," conveying greetings to Mr. Thorat on his 70th birthday.

Earlier in the week, following the results of the biennial elections for the Nashik Graduates Constituency MLC seats, Thorat announced his resignations, after capping off a bitter feud that erupted between him and Patole. At the last moment, Sudhir Tambe, brother-in-law of Thorat, refused to compete the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections regardless of being the Congress' official candidate. He instead led his son Satyajit Tambe to compete as an independent l. Satyajit won the election against MVA candidate Shubhangi Patil.

Balasaheb Thorat's silence on the matter was seen as silent support to the father-son duo, as reported by the sources. However, Thorat was recovering from a shoulder injury during the period.

Satyajit Tambe lashed out stating that along with several Congress leaders, Nana Patole deliberately sent them the wrong nomination form that resulted in him being nominated as an independent candidate. The statement from him stated Nana Patole was targeting Balasaheb Thorat and that some party members act as if they have all freedom that should not be allowed.
