Bodh Gaya is a religious site and place of pilgrimage associated with the Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Gaya district in Bihar. It is famous for being the place where Gautama Buddha is said to have obtained Enlightenment.
Siddhārtha Gautama was the historical founder of Buddhism. Here, after asceticism and meditation, he discovered the Buddhist Middle Way—a path of moderation away from the extremes of self-indulgence and self-mortification.
Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment sitting under a pipal tree, now known as the Bodhi tree. Gautama, from then on, was known as "The Perfectly Self-Awakened One," the Samyaksambuddha.
