Winter Colds – The Role of Fever

Press release from: Omron Healthcare

January and February are traditionally characterised by a lot of rain, snow, wind and freezing temperatures. Despite warm winter clothes, many cups of hot tea and more attempts to keep colds away, flu viruses tend to find their way through the immune system. The head begins aching and the forehead starts feeling suspiciously warm. Fever is mostly a signal that the body is fighting to overcome viral diseases. In order to get back on a healthy track, it is helpful to get to know the exact origin and role of fever.

How does fever arise?

An adult’s body temperature is considered to be high when the numbers lay between 37.5° to 38°C. Fever, in the proper meaning, starts at 38° C. Such an increase of the body temperature signalises that the immune system is actively fighting against pathogens; as the fever weakens them and hinders them from further reproduction. The body’s cells then destroy the weakened pathogens, and the temperature slowly returns to the normal value of 37°C for adults and 37.5°C for infants and small children. Therefore, fever is a sign of the body’s active defence mechanisms, and can actually be regarded as a good sign.

What is important to consider when having fever?

Having a higher temperature does not always necessarily need to be reduced by medication or natural remedies, such as leg compresses. As a natural defence reaction, the body fights cold viruses with fever. But if the temperature stays high for a longer period of time, it is necessary to check with a doctor. People with a well-functioning immune system usually overcome colds within a few days. A real flu, however, can take up to two weeks; and temperature can rise above 39°C. In this case, a doctor’s appointment is inevitable. When children have a high temperature, the doctor will already need to be consulted once the measurement reaches 37.7°C.

Significance of fever measurements

Fever not only indicates the body’s active defence mechanisms are at work, it is also a warning for arising viral diseases. Temperature measurement is of great medical importance in regard to recognising and treating diseases. Thus, thermometers should be standard items in every household. Modern digital thermometers ensure speed, reliability and ease of use. Omron is a well-known healthcare-specialist with decades of experience in the field of temperature measurement. The portfolio of the Japanese company includes high quality thermometers which can be used orally, axillarily, rectally, as well as in the ear. These small health-inspectors are technically well-equipped and precisely measure temperature. Moreover, the memory function provides a helpful overview of personal temperature development. Thereby, users exactly know when they should consider visiting a doctor.
