Applied Materials Tops Semiconductor Equipment Market in 2021

NEW TRIPOLI, PA, November 29, 2021… Applied Materials was the top shareholder of the global wafer front end (WFE) market of $81.7 billion with a 21.0% share, according to the report “Global Semiconductor Equipment: Markets, Market Shares, Market Forecasts,” recently published by The Information Network, (www.theinformationnet.com) a New Tripoli, PA-based market research company

“Applied Materials was the top shareholder of the global WFE market of $81.7 billion with a 21.0% share, nearly the same as in 2020.,” noted Dr. Robert Castellano, president of The Information Network. “All the top five companies gained market share from “other” companies, which made up the additional 20% of WFE revenues, as their share dropped from 21.8% in CY 2020 to 19.3% in CY2021.”

ASML followed with a 20.1% share, up from 19.7% in 2020. ASML exhibited growth of 30% QoQ in Q3, which could have moved the company to the top of the WFE market for 2021 (as it was in 2019), but the company gave a poor guidance for Q4.

Tokyo Electron, Lam Research, and KLA followed. KLAC's share increased from a 7.5% share in 2020 to a 7.8% share in 2021. KLA holds a dominant position in the metrology/inspection segment of the overall WFE market with a 55% share.

“The semiconductor equipment market increased 35.7% in 2021 but growth will slow to 14.2% in 2022, added Dr. Castellano. “The move to 5nm nodes by some of the largest semiconductor manufacturers such as TSMC and Samsung Electronics is a positive tailwind for growth.”
