Latin America Plant Protein Market Business and Investment Opportunities | Market Size and Forecast Across 50+ Segments (2021-2027) | Market Size by Ingredients & Product Categories
Plant protein market in Latin America is growing rapidly with protein products launching at big retailers, e-commerce sites, natural food stores, and even corner shops. This growth is primarily backed by the rising health consciousness and animal rights. Environmental issues, ethical, and social reasons are other factors that are also supporting the market growth.COVID-19 is further accelerating the demand for plant protein. Especially, in Brazil, consumer demand for meat products is declining due to concerns over the link between meat consumption and the ongoing COVID-19. However, consumers changing preference towards plant-based protein is helping the plant-based meat sector to record a surge in demand.
In terms of meat consumption, Brazil is the second-largest country in the world. With changing attitudes in the country, people are becoming more concerned about their health. This has resulted in the rising demand for alternative meats in the recent years. Moreover, given the widespread deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, mainly due to cattle ranching - an increasing number of people are shifting towards plant-based protein-rich alternatives in the country.
Another factor that is creating the demand for plant-based protein products is the availability of a wide range of flavors and ingredients. To meet the increasing demand, established companies and startups in Brazil are focusing on product development using new ingredients. For instance,
Superbom - a vegan food brand in Brazil launched a plant-based fish steak made of pea protein in the local supermarkets.
With the rising consumer interest in plant-based food products, investment activities are also increasing in Latin America. Food-tech Company, NotCo, rose an $85 million series C funding led by Future Positive and L Catterton, in September 2020. Since its launch in 2015, the company has developed several plant based products, including NotBurger, NotIceCream, NotMilk, and NotMayo in Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, using a proprietary AI technology.
Similarly, in 2020, 100 Foods raised BRL 1 million, out of which BRL 700,000 were raised in April 2020. The company is looking to expand its product offerings and increase its spending on marketing efforts. Although the company expected to increase its sales by 300%, the post-coronavirus forecasted increase in sales for the company stands in-between 200% to 250% by 2021.
Distribution is one of the key to achieving top-line growth in any business and it becomes more important when it comes to the food and beverage industry. Plant-based food companies in Brazil are still in the process of streamlining their distribution strategy. Most of these companies have partnered with retail stores and foodservice channels.
However, with the recent coronavirus outbreak and restaurants being shut down, e-commerce is the most preferred distribution channel for these businesses. Direct-to-consumers are also seen as a viable solution for driving business growth in times of the global pandemic.
Big food processing companies are coming together to expand their market share in the region. Sourcing raw material from other countries and manufacturing the products in Brazil is helping companies to reduce costs and streamline their operations. For instance, under the partnership of ADM and Marfrig - ADM will be responsible for supplying the raw material from Brazil, while Marfrig will be responsible for producing, distributing, and selling plant-based food in Brazil.
