Press release
Investment firms and large food producers have showed interest and invested in plant protein start-ups due to the substantial growth opportunities in the market
Global plant protein market has been growing rapidly in the past few years. The growth is primarily backed by the rising flexitarian trend in most of the countries. Flexitarian diet is likely to expand plant-protein manufacturers’ consumer-base which in turn increases profitability. Moreover, the adoption of vegetable diet and vegan meals due to the increasing health consciousness and evolving veganism among a large population is expanding the market growth. Reducing animal product intake and adding more plant-based foods in diets is creating demand for plant-based proteins.Changing lifestyles is driving consumers’ food habits. Consumers are becoming more conscious about what they eat. As a result, demand for high protein products which has less carbon footprint such as plant-based protein is rising. Also, ongoing coronavirus pandemic is creating demand for plant-based meats, as consumers are avoiding animal-based products due to health concerns. The trend is creating opportunities for manufacturers to meet the rising demand.
Plant-based proteins have emerged as a weight management tool in recent years, especially in countries such as the US, Russia, and Australia. As there are changes in preferences and common food habits, weight management is also going through a change. The trend towards more plant-based foods and diets has increased the number and types of products in the market. Many of the plant-based proteins are specifically made to help in weight management.
Globally, the demand for pea protein is rising. In the US, in particular, pea protein is gaining market share. This is primarily due to high protein content and several health benefits it offers. Additionally, the use of pea protein is increasing in dairy, bakery, and other food and beverage processing markets as an alternative to other plant-based proteins such as soy.
Plant-based protein ingredients are often considered as an incomplete source of protein. On the other hand, quinoa, pea, and hemp are emerging as a complete source of protein and contain all essential amino acids. Consequently, companies are focusing on blended plant-based protein products that can offer the optimal level of protein added with essential amino acids. For instance, pea protein lacks methionine, however, rice protein is enriched with methionine. Similarly, the pea protein contains lysine, in which rice protein lacks. Therefore, companies are blending these two ingredients to make it more nutritious. Quinoa is also used for blended protein products. Companies also add enzymes in blended plant-protein products to enhance digestibility. Blended plant-proteins are expected to capture market share over the period.
Investment firms and large food producers have showed interest and invested in plant protein start-ups due to the substantial growth opportunities in the market. As a result, competitiveness is increasing along with the increasing number of players. In January 2020, Califia Farms, a producer of plant-based dairy products raised US$225 million in Series D funding from QIA. The new investors have acquired a minority stake in the company.
Similarly, in February 2020, AllPlants, a plant-based meal delivery company in the UK raised £2 million. Founded in 2016, the company has already served more than one million plant-based meals and with the funding, the company is planning to strengthen its position in the UK.
The e-commerce channel is emerging as one of the most preferred distribution channels for plant based food during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Plant-based food producers and distributors are focusing on the e-commerce channel to capture this trend.
