Smart Grid: The Future of Interactive Energy Consumption?
The Smart Gird electricity network and technology has the potential to propel the energy industry forward, offering increased reliability, availability, and efficiency amidst growing 21st century energy demand. Experts from Detecon, SAP, and ThinkECO will discuss Smart Grid’s successes, opportunities, and challenges at the German Center for Research and Innovation, on November 15, 2012. Follow live on Twitter @gcri_ny (hashtag #SmartGrid).NEW YORK (November 13, 2012) – The energy industry’s demand-response system is in dire need of an overhaul: In light of the recent power outages caused by Hurricane Sandy, the growing necessity for an intelligent energy grid with increased reliability and resilience during extreme weather situations, automatic fault location, and self-healing functionality, emerges. Also, every summer, with temperatures soaring and air conditioning at maximum capacity, insufficient monitoring abilities leave major New York City energy suppliers scrambling to meet consumers’ high energy demands while trying to prevent power brownouts and blackouts.
In this part of the GCRI-GACC Smart Grid discussion series, Bernt C. Klein, Senior Vice President Americas at Detecon Inc. of the Deutsche Telekom Group, will discuss telecommunications engagement in the Smart Grid field, in particular solutions for communication challenges between consumers and utitlities. Brian Jones, Senior Principal, Energy & Utilities at SAP, who also leads the SAP Smart Grid Innovation Council, will explain how the Smart Grid energy transformation will take place and how this unprecedented level of data processing will play a critical role in providing and regulating future energy consumption. Mei Shibata, Chief Strategy Officer at ThinkEco, will present a demand-response program approach. She has been leading the operational effort around coolNYC, a ConEdison-ThinkEco demand-response solution which helps regulate electricity consumption at peak times, for the past two years.
Prof. Kurt Becker, Associate Provost for Research and Technology Initiatives and Professor of Physics at Polytechnic Institute of NYU, will moderate this discussion.
