Progress through Unity
Cologne, 07 November 2012
The eCarTec in Munich is Germany’s leading electromobility trade show. While the focus last year was still on various new vehicle models with electric and hybrid powertrains, this year’s show, from 23-25 October 2012, turned the spotlight on the innovations in suppliers’ components, services and technologies. Particularly in the sector of motor and component manufacturers, many new actors are pushing into a market that itself is no longer entirely new. Even though the concrete sales figures for electric vehicles (EVs) still lie in the niche range, the potential of electromobility and the sustainability of this coming technology are undisputed. With this evolution, the eCarTec is moving more and more toward becoming one of the most important supplier platforms in the German-speaking world.
The individual movers and shakers from business and politics are apparently paying increasing attention to electric mobility, both as a whole and in all its aspects. Many suppliers from across a broad spectrum of individual EV specializations are working together in joint projects to achieve holistic solutions, thus progressing from the simple development of electromobility components – which have already reached the series and market-ready stage in many areas – to products suitable for widespread everyday use.
The medium-term prospects with regard to market development and strategy are highly diverse. Whereas some actors are calling for subsidies and buyer incentives, others regard the present structural deficiencies standing in the way of widespread everyday use as the primary complex, interdisciplinary challenge to be mastered in the near future – independently of the still-high initial investments. Increasingly, standardization is one of the key issues in this context, particularly for the financial planning certainty closely associated with this
The industry is moving toward a broader applicability. And the market players are gearing up for this. While the large OEMs and Tier-1s are maintaining their positions, many enterprises in related fields – above all manufacturers of electric motors and components from the industrial non-automotive sectors – are seeing their chance and presenting their project concepts and prototypes. Many of these still have a long development road ahead of them, but the willingness to invest – and thus the competition - is growing with rising demand.
rational motion and TM4 were once more on the scene with a joint booth for the entire trade show. Additionally, Canadian motor manufacturer TM4 was nominated for the eCarTec Awards in the category “drive technology, system electrics, testing systems” for its motor controller/inverter TM4 CO150. The patented Reflex™ gate driver technology it embodies is explained in an article in the current issue 5/2012 of the professional journal ATZ elektronik (http://www.rationalmotion.de/fileadmin/media/ATZelektronik_05_2012_scientific_article_TM4_power_electronics.pdf).
