SGS Germany Takes Part in National Research Project for Electro Mobility

The SGS Group Germany is a dedicated testing and certification partner in the national research project promoted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research called “SafeBatt” - a landmark project of the National Platform for Electric Mobility. SafeBatt aims at developing secure batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles.

15 different partners from the German automotive and supplier industries as well as from science academia are working to increase the safety of batteries and to develop ideas on how to improve their everyday usability. The focus is on, for example, improved cell materials and new types of semiconductor sensors. In future, these should capture safety parameters, such as chemical processes, and increase in pressure in the battery cell.

The SafeBatt project will contribute to the improvement of battery safety for electric vehicles over the entire life time and in extreme situations.

The new SGS Battery Test House in Munich pursues a similar aim. Specialists for electric mobility identify potential hazards and suggest ways on how the important criteria for safety are to be harmonized internationally. In addition, SGS aims at improving the process for risk analysis, qualification and certification testing of batteries (http://www.sgs.com/en/Automotive/Electrical-Components/Batteries.aspx) and at standardizing the important steps in order to accelerate market access and to reduce costs, which is the ultimate key to widespread acceptance of electric vehicles among consumers.

Besides the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Technical University of Munich, other project partners are the MEET of the University of Münster, the ICT of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, BASF SE, BMW, Daimler AG, German ACCUmotive GmbH & Co. KG, ElringKlinger AG, Evonik Litarion GmbH, Infineon Technologies AG, Li-Tec Battery GmbH, Volkswagen AG and Wacker Chemie AG.
