According to a recent (2012) study conducted by the American Heart Association (AHA), an estimated 76.4 million U.S. adults ≥ 20 years of age are hypertensive. Another AHA study has demonstrated that slow breathing helps in decreasing blood pressure in primary hypertension.

Thanks to a company called SoftArea srl, people across the country will now have access to the first ever iPhone application that simultaneously monitor their heart rate while guiding them in breathing.

“The iPhone application measures the heart rate while guiding the user in a relaxing breathing exercise,” said Michele Bellin, ceo of SoftArea srl, the developer of the new app that’s scheduled to be released soon. “

From medical research it is well known that the heart rate varies during the breath cycles. This physiological principle is named Respiratory sinus arrhythmia.”

Bellin explained that the new app, which will be offered free of charge during the first two days of its release date, correlates the expected heart rate variation with the measured heart rate variation and provides the user with the coherence score, which measures how well a person’s heart rate is after breathing.

“In other words, it shows how well the user is performing the breathing exercise,” Bellin said, before adding that, “We’re offering interested people the opportunity to be informed of the availability of this breakthrough iPhone application in real time if they connect with us via our Twitter account: @HeartRatePlus.”

The chief executive officer acknowledged that currently there are already applications on the market that are able to monitor your heart rate using the iPhone camera and applications that are able to guide you through breathing sessions.

However, HeartRate+, according to Bellin, is the first application that is able to simultaneously perform both functions.

“Most importantly, it elaborates the information to provide the coherence score between heart rate and breath,” Bellin stressed about the new app, which is the first iPhone application released by SoftArea srl.

It is also a follow-up of the medical research, made by SoftArea srl, which is active in Italy since the April 2011 in the field of Sleep Quality and Relax.

The release of the new iPhone application could prove to have perfect timing. According to the American Heart Association the U.S. projected total costs in year 2015, related to Hypertension, will nearly $121 billion.

Bellin pointed out that his company’s iPhone application, which is geared toward iPhone and iPad user from ages 20 to 60 years old, interested in technology, health care and well-being, allows users to perform relaxing breathing sessions while concentrating on the inner body.

“You can also store your results and share them with friends via email, Facebook and Twitter,” Bellin said. “In fact, a video on how to use the application can be found at: www.heartrateplus.com
