Dr Jan Marien

Dr Jan Marien

Over the past three decades, Isabellenhütte Heusler has gone through a process of fundamental change. The company based in Dillenburg, Germany, has evolved from a supplier of semi-finished products into a globally active company whose thermoelectric and resistance alloys, low-ohmic precision and power resistors, and current, voltage and temperature measurement systems are in demand worldwide.
Dr Ullrich Hetzler, head of research and development at our company for many years, retired from his position in July of this year, and is followed in this role by 45-year-old physicist Dr Jan Marien. Dr Marien, who originates from the north German town of Kiel, joined the company in October 2010 as head of development for measuring technology. This enabled the company to prepare the transition of the role in advance.
In his new role, Dr Marien will be making use of his experience as head of development and head of technological development at Sensitec, a manufacturer of sensor solutions, for which he worked from 2003 to 2010. Prior to these positions, he spent five years as a team leader for physical materials analysis and as a project manager for sensor systems at IBM Deutschland Speichersysteme GmbH and five years as a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, formerly the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research, in Stuttgart.

Leading innovation, shaping the future

One of the key tasks of the new overall head of development will be to perceive upcoming trends in technology as they emerge and harness them as vital inspiration for the company’s long-term development. Dr Marien, explaining the areas he intends to focus on, says: “I will be helping produce product and technology road maps for medium- and long-term corporate planning and manage operations in our Components and Measurement business fields, as well as driving their strategic development.”
The company aims for the Measurements division, for instance, to become established as a tier 1 supplier accepted by customers, specifically in the areas of industrial drive technology, energy distribution networks and renewable energies. In Components, Dr Marien will pursue the objective of generating economies of efficiency and scale with existing products, and entering new markets and new fields of application with new products.

Early achievement of series production readiness

In our reorganised research and development department, Dr Marien will combine ongoing tasks related to continuing our innovative tradition with new foci and ideas. Our new overall head of development plans to set new standards in areas such as product development; we want new product ideas to be series production-ready at a very early prototype stage in terms of the production process and the associated cost structure. In formulating this objective, the company is responding to the challenges of Isabellenhütte’s established structures, the increase in internationalisation in the business and the rapid growth of our markets.
Embarking on his new role, Dr Marien will draw inspiration from his predecessor’s credo of searching for solutions off the beaten track: “This approach is crucial if we wish to secure our USPs and therefore remain competitive. Our medium-sized, family-run business possesses the ideal set of conditions to continue taking this strategy forward.”

New FMx shunt family: Small and low-ohmic
Isabellenhütte has developed a new range of precision resistors in standard sizes with resistances ranging from 1 to 6 mOhm for applications which require small and low-ohmic shunts. In terms of their construction, the components are also less complex than the current ISA-PLAN®resistance families. And yet, they offer the same performance quality: very good long-term stability, a low temperature coefficient, and low thermoelectric voltages. With the FMx shunt family, Isabellenhütte has
