World Drowning Prevention Day - July 25th

World Drowning Prevention Day - July 25th

One of the leading causes of preventable deaths still remain to be drowning and hence, in April 2021, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly affirmed drowning as a preventable global public health issue and declared 25 July as World Drowning Prevention Day.

This day should be taken as an opportunity to offer awareness and solutions towards prevention of such accidental deaths.
Globally, an estimated 235,600 people drown every year, and drowning is among the ten leading causes of death for children aged 5-14 years.

In 2020 the UK saw an increase in accidental drownings with the key issues being:
* Inland open waters, such as rivers, canals, lakes, reservoirs and quarries continue to be the leading locations with 58% of deaths.
* Males continue to over represent with 78% of deaths.
* Almost half of (43%) people had no intention to enter the water, such as those walking, with causes including slips, trips and falls, being cut off by the tide, or swept in by waves.
(Statistics borrowed from www.nationalwatersafety.org)

Bliss Healthcare, as part of its 10th year anniversary joins hands with WHO’s initiative of recognizing July 25th of every year as ‘World Drowning Prevention Day’ and is committed to create awareness and contribute to, and engage in, this global day of activity.
At Bliss Healthcare, we recognize the impeding impact such deaths have towards the bereaved families and have scheduled awareness programs to prevent the same.

Statistics say, currently over 90% of global drowning occurs in low- and middle-income countries, so there is clearly lack of awareness and preventive methods in these countries to prevent drowning.

According to the Kenya police records, about 4,607 deaths in 2018 alone were caused by drowning. Figures further show that even skilled swimmers were also victims. But statistics could be even higher as several cases go unreported. It was confirmed that most of the deaths involve children under the age of ten who drown while swimming in rivers or swimming pools often left unattended.

Bliss Healthcare and subsidiary companies are focused in creating awareness of tested methods to prevent such deaths in accordance to WHO’s detailed implementation guidelines.

Water is an integral part of our lives. It gives us life, but it can also take it away. While no one is immune, the stark differences between drowning rates in the highest risk countries and lowest risk countries show that drowning is not inevitable. Structural measures can be put in place, and programmes to prevent drowning can be implemented. We at Bliss Healthcare, urge people across the globe to join hands towards this cause and emphasize the fact that beyond all reasons to be diverse, this is a global cause and actions need to come out from the global community which we are all a part of.
