People who are suffering from cancer and used to include high protein in their diet during middle age are more likely to die than those who eat less protein, according to a survey. However, a moderate intake of protein may be beneficial for people older than 65 years according to a study. In several cases, Popular diets have high proteins and low sugars. According to a study, The risks of a high-protein diet are even comparable to smoking, the researchers said. People who smoke are four times more likely to die of cancer compared with nonsmokers. The study also found that middle-aged people who ate rich foods in animal proteins — as well as meat, milk, and cheese — were 75 % more likely to die of some cause than people who ate a low-protein diet at intervals.

According to the study, the risk of death increases in people older than 65 years consuming protein. So, It is recommended that older people should intake protein of moderate level. Having enough protein in the diet is very important for people to maintain a healthy weight and protect against frailty.

It is also seen that the risk of cancer reduces when proteins are consumed through plant sources - such as beans which may be because plants have a different composition, and don't stimulate growth hormones as efficiently as meat proteins.

According to a report, the Mediterranean diet can be best for expanding the life span because it has low animal protein and high in carbohydrates. The researcher suggests eating about 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight each day in middle age.

"When you have a lot of protein, these growth factors go up, and we've shown that they help normal cells become cancer-like cells, and then they help the cells grow," Longo said.
