Osteoporosis: Risk of fractures rises because of bone atrophy

Altough about 25 % of the Germans suffer under bone atrophy, the prohylaxis against osteoporosis and its therapy are still neglected. Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones, whereas the bone density will decrease because of a quick degradation of the bone mass and structure. Comparing the healthy with the osteoporotic bone structure, the transformation of the bone architecture is clearly visible. As a result of the disease the bone mass dwindles and becomes frail (see picture).

The insufficient stability leads to a higher risk for bone deformations and fractures, which can affect the whole skeleton. Older generations, seniors above 50 years, are very vulnerable to osteoporosis. 80% of all osteoporosis diseases affect women in the menopause. The healing of fractures is still possible, however nerves can be damaged and parts of the body can be become fully or partly inflexible. More dangers can be a pneumonia or embolism.

Peripheral quantitative computed tomography can prove if there is a decrease. However, it is also possible to prevent the degradation of the bone structure. An active life-style and sports protect against bone atrophy, preferentially outdoor. In sunlight the body produces vitamin D, which is important to maintain the bone mass. Another important role plays calcium, which can be found in many milk products. With an adequate alimentation, f. ex. with curd, mild, natural yoghourt and cheese, it is easy to cover the daily requirement of about 1000 mg. In contrast the consumption of alcohol, nicotine, sugar and coffee should be reduced or left out at all.
