Obesity or muscle wasting disease? A patient's body composition data are essential for the diagnosis and treatment of weight-related disorders. Too much fat in the body is unhealthy – but so is too little.

A risky body composition may not be obvious at first glance. A heavyweight boxer, for example, has great muscle mass and a high weight. According to the Body Mass Index, this combination indicates obesity, but the boxer is a very healthy competitive athlete. Another example involves a patient with normal weight but a very high proportion of water. In this case too the BMI is wrong because the patient falls within a normal range although he is actually at risk.
