The SGS Tirupur laboratory is ISO17025 accredited and fully functional in delivering testing, inspection and social responsibility

In Tirupur, known as the Knits Capital of India, SGS India inaugurated a larger new testing laboratory recently, aimed at serving the city’s many international and domestic brands of home textile buyers, domestic retailers, manufacturers and exporters. Located in College Road, Tirupur, the completely new facility was officially opened in November 2011 by the President of Tirupur Exporters Association, Padma Shri Aurumugam Sakthivel. With state-of-the-art testing facilities for the latest restricted substances and physical testing it caters for a complete range of apparel and textile product testing requirements.

With an enhanced capability for testing azo dyes, phthalates and other restricted substances the new lab will particularly appeal to clients who need to comply with international standards (http://newsletter.sgs.com/eNewsletterPro/uploadedimages/000006/sgs-safeguards-05412-new-european-standard-for-aromatic-amines-derived-from-azo-colorants-a4-en-12.pdf). The new laboratory’s 30,000 square feet of floor space, enhanced capacity and widened capabilities promise textile customers in and around Tirupur a huge improvement in turnaround time .The new facility fully complies with statutory environmental regulations with the installation of an independent effluent treatment plant.

Tirupur is clearly an important hub for exports of Indian cotton merchandise to markets in Europe and USA. Demand for the services of the new lab is a clear indication of the increasing regional sophistication in consumer product testing. EU regulations like REACH and US regulations like CPSIA have elevated the parameters for chemical testing in the textile supply chain along with other international product safety and quality demands. Equipped to satisfy all the latest restricted substance requirements (http://www.sgs.com/en/Our-Company/News-and-Media-Center/News-and-Press-Releases/2011/09/Softlines-Restricted-Substance-Manual-Softlines-Green-Pulse.aspx), the state-of-the-art facility can also address sustainability management issues in the textile and apparel industry.

Dr. G. Sudesh Kumar, Director of Consumer Testing Services at SGS India stated at the opening ceremony, “It has been our endeavor to be in close proximity to our customers’ businesses. A lab in Tirupur was the next logical step towards enhancing SGS India’s ever increasing footprint in India. Apart from our regular softlines testing, this lab will also enable manufacturers to launch products complying with ever more stringent REACH guidelines.” He went on to say that, “SGS India’s new lab will enable Tirupur to play an important role in the global textile market.”

SGS India (http://www.sgsgroup.in/) has operated a laboratory in Tirupur laboratory since 1996. The enlarged, new Tirupur lab is ISO 17025 accredited and is now fully functional for delivering services with the highest level of integrity in testing, inspection and social responsibility. For the city of Tirupur, this expansion takes world-class quality assurance solutions to another level.
