Walk the Walk
(BOSTON, MA) – Bostonians can already talk the talk, but can they walk the walk? Although Boston’s known as “America’s walking city,” how many people actually stop and “smell the roses?” It’s time to slow down and look around!Beginning in June 2012, the Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE) is offering a series of interactive walking tours designed to educate and inspire. Guests will have a chance to explore historical neighborhoods on foot while discovering fascinating facts about the community around us! Whether you’ve just moved to the city and want to get to know your neighborhood, or have lived in the city for years, there’s something for everyone to discover. The BCAE tours will be held on three Tuesday evenings throughout the month of June and will include: A Walking Tour of the South End, A Walking Tour of Bay Village and The Theatre District, and A Walking Tour of the Fort Point Channel Neighborhood. All tours are non-refundable and will be held rain or shine. Registration is necessary. Please visit www.bcae.org or call the Boston Center for Adult Education at 617-267-4430 to sign up.
Tour Schedule:
A Walking Tour of the South End:
Tuesday, June 12th, 2012 from 6:00PM - 8:00PM; $20.00
During the mid-nineteenth century, Boston's South End developed into a fashionable neighborhood of tree-shaded oval parks and bowfront bordered avenues. Explore this delightful neighborhood on foot, and discover the topographical and architectural development of this fascinating, multicultural, urban community. The tour will encompass an 1810 burial ground, an 1830s wooden house tucked away in an alley and a number of charming masonry town houses. You will want to come back on your own to visit the many vibrant shops, galleries and restaurants you’ll pass in the course of the walk. *Please note: Tour meets at the BCAE. No refunds issued for Walking Tours. Rain or shine.
A Walking Tour of Bay Village and The Theatre District:
Tuesday, June 19th, 2012 from 6:00PM - 8:00PM; $20.00
Tour Park Square - once a major railroad transportation hub - and view great landmarks such as the Castle, a massive granite building constructed during the 1890s, as well as the Park Plaza Hotel, a late 1920s symbol of the glamour and prosperity associated with the Roaring '20s. From Park Square, wend your way through Bay Village with its "mini" red brick Beacon Hill row houses and former fire station. Finish in the Theatre District, looking at theatres designed by Clarence Blackall, the murals of Old Boston in the lobby of the Little Building, as well as the only commercial building in Boston designed by H.H. Richardson.*Please note: Tour meets at the BCAE. No refunds issued for Walking Tours. Rain or shine.
A Walking Tour of the Fort Point Channel Neighborhood:
Tuesday, June 26th, 2012 from 6:00PM - 8:00PM; $20.00
Summer is the perfect time to explore the Fort Point Channel neighborhood, a bustling area that's home to museums, artists' studios, restaurants and lofts. Once the center of the world's wool industry, it's also the birthplace of the safety razor and Valentine's Day candy hearts! Learn about the remarkable landfill projects that created the neighborhood as you consider the gritty streetscapes that inspired painter Charles Sheeler, photographer Walker Evans, and director Martin Scorsese, whose 2007 Oscar winner, The Departed, was shot on these very streets. We'll meet in front of South Station, at the corner of Atlantic and Summer Streets. *Please read: All Tours are non-refundable.
