Village of Islandia Memorial Day Ceremony on May 26 Hosts Local War Veterans, Featuring Flyby of Sikorsky UH-34D Helicopter from Vietnam War
The Village of Islandia will host its Memorial Day ceremony on May 26 at 10 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Triangle at the intersection of Old Nichols Road and Johnson Avenue. There will be a presentation of the colors by the United States Marine Corps Color Guard, an invocation by Monsignor Colonel Francis Midura of the U.S. Army Reserve (retired) and a wreath presentation.Mayor Allan M. Dorman, who served with the Marines during the Vietnam War, will recognize some of the local war veterans, including Sergeant Bill Dufek, Drill Instructor, U.S. Army; Bill Ferris, who was a Swift Boat Commander during the Vietnam War; and Jim Dowling, former Highway Superintendent, Town of Smithtown, who was a Prisoner of War during World War II.
The ceremony will conclude with a flyby of the Flying Freedom Memorial Sikorsky UH-34D Helicopter by the U.S. Marine Corps Helicopter Squadron 361 in Cutchogue (weather permitting). This helicopter was used for combat rescue missions during the Vietnam War, served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was used by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to recover astronauts from the Mercury mission.
