2020 has been dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This flu-like virus has had severe impacts on national health systems across the world, dramatically restricted international travel, and forced people to retreat into their homes under government-imposed lockdown orders. Its wider economic repercussions have also been detrimental for many people. Many businesses have been forced to close, while in other cases, employers have had to reduce their workforce or ask workers to take significant pay cuts. As a result of this economic downturn, there are now increasing numbers of people desperately looking for employment and will do almost anything to make ends meet.

However, despite this pressure to find work in a particularly tough climate, job seekers should remain mindful of potential workplace hazards they could face when taking up a new job. In addition, it’s important that workers are fully aware of how to handle such hazards, the role of the employer in preventing them, and their rights in case their mental or physical health is compromised as a result of such factors. Here is a list of the most common workplace hazards and how best to handle them:

Physical Dangers
Regardless of whether you do a physically demanding job that requires you to be on your feet all day, or you’re among the growing number of people working from a home office, there will be physical risks involved. Back pain is one of the most common ailments affecting workers in the modern world. If you do a job that requires you to operate machinery or do heavy lifting, make sure the company provides adequate health and safety to prevent back injury. Likewise, those doing desk jobs should ensure they have an ergonomic workstation that helps them maintain a good posture.

Chemical Hazards
When we talk about chemical and biological hazards, we aren’t only referring to those found in the laboratory. Believe it or not, chemical hazards exist all around us. For instance, if you work in an older building, there could be a risk of asbestos exposure, which could potentially cause cancer. If you do find that you’ve suffered as a result of this, you could be entitled to considerable compensation from your employers or the building’s landlords. Consulting a specialist law firm such as Bergman Legal (https://www.bergmanlegal.com/) will give you greater insights into the merits of your particular case.

Mental Stress
Something that has come to the fore in recent years is the importance of emotional well-being in the workplace. While stress is a part of everyday life, toxic work culture has been linked to mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. There is a number of factors that contribute to a negative working environment including unrealistically heavy workloads, lack of job security, and discrimination. While some companies do invest in wellness programs for their staff, it’s also up to you to find ways to reduce stress levels. Meditation, regular exercise, or talking to a wellness counselor about any issues could all help.

Despite this, there have been significant shifts in the global economy and employment opportunities are now more scarce, so it is important that workers do not settle for anything less than they are legally entitled to. There may be some companies that will take advantage of tough economic circumstances to get as much out of their workers as possible. With that being said, more reputable employers looking to retain staff in the long term will do everything necessary to ensure that their workers remain happy and healthy.
