Erler-Zimmer develops new skin suture trainer

The specialist for medical simulators Erler-Zimmer has designed a new model for practicing different suture techniques together with the University Medicine Göttingen. The set includes a suture pad and a holder with suction cups. It allows students to practice the surgical suturing again and again. The suturing resistance of the artificial pad is almost like the real skin. The material is very robust and guarantees a long term use. The user can practice various skin suture techniques, f. ex.:

Single interrupted suture
The single interrupted suture is a common technique of suturing. The stitch is pulled in circles trough the tissue and ends with a surgeons knot. For larger wounds several knots are required. However, it is also possible to use a long stitch and to lead it overcastly or in one layer.

Intracutaneous suture
The intracutaneous suture is a suturing technique where the stitch is placed by taking bites through the skin at the beginning and the end and pulled between through the papillary dermis. Therefore, there are only few stitches which could create scars. This technique suits well for suturing without tension, it is also preferred for sutures in the face. In veterinary medicine it has the advantage, that the “patients” cannot pull out the buried sutures and hurt themselves.

Vertical mattress suture
The vertical mattress suture is a further developed variation of the simple interrupted suture. The stitch is placed into the wound edge and the next is closer to the edge, so that it can be pulled on the opposite side right under the skin and knotted on the surface. This technique offers a precise vertical alignment of the superficial wound margins. Furthermore, it is not likely that the material can cut into skin, so the technique suits very well for suturing in anatomic locations which tend to invert. On the other hand, 4 stitches are required which can leave white scars after healing.
A possible variation is the half-buried vertical mattress sutures, which only needs 2 stitches.
