iPAD Angola 2012

USD 16,5 billion dollars are ready to be invested in the consolidation of the electrical energy sector

During the opening session of the legislative year, Angola’s State President, José Eduardo dos Santos, made reference to the year 2016 as the year for the stabilization of energy supply in Angola. In a recent public appearance, the country’s Minister of Energy and Water, João Batista Borges, confirmed that development projects should be implemented until that time, in order to increase fivefold the country’s installed capacity, aiming to create an adequate national grid. The investment is expected to be in the region of 9 billion dollars, for the installation of production capacity and 7,5 billion dollars for the associated transmission system.

Among the various alternatives to be considered and in respect of which a serious medium term commitment is expected from the Angolan Government, are hydro electrical generation, natural gas, solar energy, wind energy and forestry biomass. As an example, we wish to make reference to the recent project to build a wind farm with an installed capacity of 100 MW, as well as the rural electrification project “Aldeia Solar”, which anticipates the installation of more than 90 solar systems in the various Angolan provinces during the current year.

In Angola, only between 30% and 35% of the population has access to electricity; this problem is further aggravated by the fact that, in the majority of the cases, the existing infrastructures do not keep up with the development in the region, falling short of the necessary production capacity. According to the Minister João Batista Borges, there is an aparent need for an additional and sound investment in the rehabilitation and expansion of the existing infrastructure.

What is the role of the private sector?

In addition to all the above mentioned investments and projects, “the Angolan Ministry of Energy and Water is focused on the creation of the necessary conditions to enable the participation of the private sector in the independent production of energy”, declared José Monteiro, Director of the 4th edition of the iPAD* Angola Conference and Exhibition, an event designed to bring together government officials and private investors to discuss development partnerships in Angola.

Partnership opportunities under analysis during the 4th edition of iPAD Angola

iPAD Angola was specifically designed to provide infrastructure information and business opportunities to all its participants. “The recently launched conference programme is a reflection of this” expresses José Monteiro, adding that during the 2012 edition priority will be given to the energy, transport and logistics, industry, financial, water and sanitation, mining and telecommunications sectors.

For the fourth time, iPAD Angola will bring together, during the course of 3 days, more than 80 reputed national and international speakers, directly involved in Angola’s infrastructural development, in order to analyse all the infrastructure partnerships available in the country and clarify the audience regarding the steps to be taken in order to be successful in the Angolan market.
