Nadine Y. Jeners: Matches Color to Words at Agora Gallery
German painter Nadine Y. Jeners creates bold compositions that simultaneously assert themselves — the words “made by me” often appear in their lower halves — and let viewers determine meaning. These visually arresting works evoke fusions of color field paintings and text-based conceptual art, the two-toned canvases divided horizontally with text in both sections. One is invariably tempted to draw meaning from the combinations of words like “luck” or “energy” and colors, which allow for endless interpretations. Jeners further teases our impulse to decipher these pairings with beautifully stylized typography.Sometimes these font choices seem complimentary, for example in the case of “power” in large, wide capital letters, but elsewhere they remain enigmatically enticing, as with the word “hope” in elegant but delicate two-toned lowercase. The textural qualities of Jeners’ brushstrokes are exquisite, with subtle variations in density, light and layering playing out across the seemingly monochrome fields. Gently curving paint daubs turn into lively bursts of color. Words and hues interact playfully on her dynamic painted fields.

Two excellent collective exhibitions will be gracing the walls of Agora Gallery this spring, in addition to a remarkable solo exhibition featuring the works of Austrian artist Fred Friedrich. Elements of Abstraction presents art with the ability to induce a shift in perspective, allowing the viewer to reach new conclusions about what they see and experience that vision in different ways. Portals of Perception displays works which seem to breathe with creative energy and inspiration, and a passionate joy in the world and its complexities which they pass, in turn, to those who see them. In Fin de Ciel: Fred Friedrich / a Solo Exhibition the audience is introduced to the tremendously powerful artwork of a man who is constantly engaged in exploring the balance between the figurative and the abstract, the fluid and the definite. The result is a mesmerizing collection of works which speak across barriers of culture, place or time to reach fundamental elements of existence. The exhibitions will begin on March 30, 2012 and will run until April 19, 2012. The opening reception will take place on April 5, 2012. Entrance is free and all art enthusiasts are warmly encouraged to attend and meet the artists responsible for these enthralling creations.
